Understanding Diamonds

The 4Cs: What Really Matters When Choosing a Diamond

When shopping for a diamond, you’ve likely heard about the “4Cs”, cut, clarity, colour, and carat. These four characteristics are the universal standard for evaluating diamonds, but do you know which of them really makes a diamond shine?

Cut: The True Star of the Show

According to the Gemological Institute of America (GIA), cut has the greatest impact on a diamond’s beauty. Why? Because the cut controls how light interacts with the stone, creating brilliance, fire, and sparkle. A well-cut diamond will dazzle, even if it’s smaller or has slight variations in color or clarity.

CLARITY & COLOUR: SUBTLE INFLUENCES

While clarity and colour are important, their impact is often less noticeable. Many inclusions are microscopic, and subtle colour differences may not be visible to the naked eye. This means that a diamond with slightly lower clarity or colour can still look stunning when it’s expertly cut.

Carat: Weight Doesn’t Equal Beauty

Carat measures the diamond’s weight, not its beauty. A larger stone may be impressive in size, but without an excellent cut, it won’t sparkle as brilliantly.

BEAUTY IS PERSONAL

Ultimately, diamonds are about more than numbers. Beauty is subjective, and each person experiences a diamond differently. What catches your eye may be different from someone else’s preference and that’s what makes choosing the perfect diamond so personal and exciting.
