Understanding Diamonds

Natural vs. Lab-Grown Diamonds: What’s Right for You?

What should I choose?

At JK Schmidt Jewellers, we know that choosing a diamond is more than just a purchase—it’s a deeply personal decision, whether you’re shopping for an engagement ring, a milestone gift, or a piece of fine jewellery to treasure forever. One of the most common questions we hear in our store is: “What’s the difference between natural diamond or a lab-grown diamond? What should I choose?”

Let’s break down the key differences so you can choose the diamond that fits your values, style, and budget.

1. Origin & Creation

Natural Diamonds

Formed over billions of years deep within the Earth’s mantle, natural diamonds are created under extreme heat and pressure. They are then brought to the surface by ancient volcanoes and are mined from various parts of the world. Each one carries a unique geological fingerprint—a true masterpiece of nature.

Lab-Grown Diamonds

These diamonds are created in a lab using advanced technology that replicates the natural diamond-growing process. They’re chemically, physically, and optically identical to mined diamonds.

2. Appearance & Quality

To the naked eye (and even under a microscope), there is no visual difference between natural and lab-grown diamonds. Both can be cut to the same exacting standards and graded for the 4Cs: Cut, Clarity, Colour, and Carat. However up until recently GIA, the leaders in diamond grading have changed the way they grade lab grown diamonds. We’ll be breaking down what this means—and how it impacts your diamond choice—in an upcoming blog post. Stay tuned!

At JK Schmidt Jewellers, we carry certified diamonds of both types, and our staff is happy to walk you through the distinctions in person.

3. Price

This is where lab-grown diamonds often shine.

Lab-grown diamonds typically cost 30–50% less than their natural counterparts of the same quality.

Natural Diamonds command higher prices due to their rarity and the labor-intensive mining process.

For couples or individuals looking for large sizes or quality without stretching their budget, lab-grown is an appealing option.

4. Environmental & Ethical Considerations

Lab-grown diamonds are often marketed as the more sustainable choice:

Lower carbon footprint (especially if renewable energy is used in the lab) and no mining is required.

That said, many natural diamonds—particularly those we source at JK Schmidt Jewellers—are ethically mined, with conflict-free certifications and responsible supply chains.

We’re proud to support producers who prioritize fair labor practices and environmental stewardship.

5. Value Over Time

Natural diamonds have historically held their value better on the resale market due to their rarity. Lab-grown diamonds, while becoming more popular, tend to depreciate faster, much like electronics or other tech-produced goods.

If resale or long-term investment value is a consideration, this is a crucial factor.

Go Natural if you:

• Appreciate the rarity and history of earth-formed diamonds

• Want a traditional choice with long-standing market value

• See your diamond as a timeless heirloom

Go Lab-Grown if you:

• Want a larger or higher-quality stone for your budget

• Prefer a tech-forward option

• Are focused on beauty and brilliance, not resale
